change of attitude

I don't know what everyone else thought of this class but when we first started the semester but I wasn't too optimistic about what I would learn and the whole blogging aspect of the class. I told myself to give it an honest shot and I think I've surprised myself. There is a lot of technology out there that I just really didn't know about and I think I've had a few really good idea's on how to use it in my future classroom. These lesson plans that we have been creating have been very helpful and actually pretty fun to do. I still think that some changes could be made to the course but I guess I just wanted to hear what all of you thought about the class and your experience and maybe what the one thing was that you thought benefited you the most. For me, the benefit was learning to use Mac's. I know that might sound silly but I have never used them before but there's a lot of stuff that macs can do that HP's can't which is the computers that I have always been familar with. I feel like I am a bit more versitle with my technology and I think that's pretty cool.

my lesson examples

Rick, I don't know if I am the only one with this problem of if others will have this issue as well. For my lesson plan I am allowing my students to either do a powerpoint presentation or a movie for their project. Do I need to do an example for both? Uploading the movie to the computer is way out of my league...I guess I could do something with imovie, but again only doing it with one person wouldn't have the effect I'm looking for in my students' project. In reality what I would do as a teacher would show a movie from a previous year for an example but I understand that that doesn't work for your first year of teaching. Anyway, just let me know what you would like me to do. Thanks!

Lesson Plan Overview

For this lesson plan I will adress standard 6 objective 1 for highschool history students. "Students will understand how the Great Depression and the New Deal affected the United States. Investigate the impact of the Great Depression on the United States."
We will learn about the New Deal and the Depression and how both effected the US and the state of Utah. (Change state depending on where you are teaching). They will need to know why the depression happened and why the New Deal was started and who started it. However, I as the teacher won't need to teach them everything. I want them to work with a group and either create a powerpoint presentation or a movie about some aspect of the New Deal and the Depression. If they create a movie they can role play interviews and pretend that they are someone who lived through the Depression. They can relate experieces and the facts through their fictional stories. They could also do something like a news broadcast. They would be the anchors and report the lack of jobs and money. If they do a powerpoint presentation I will have them teach their presentation so they won't just be able to copy and paste information. they will need to know it so they can then teach it for the whole class. If they do a movie we will watch it in class--the movie only needs to be about 20 min long. They can use anything to gather information such as class notes, the internet, books, family members such as grandparents with personal experices as long as they cite their souces in some form or another. I will do a powerpoint presentation to give them an idea of what I am looking for. I will need to lecture for a day or two about the Great Depression: how it started, what it effected it: jobs, income, famiily structure, national debt in time of peace, the begginings of the new deal, why roosevelt believed it would help, and how it helped specifically in Utah, what were the results of the New Deal in Utah and did people support it or fight it and why.

Things that you will need to be aware of...
Do your students have access to camcorders or to Powerpoint? That's why they have the choice
If they do Powerpoint is the information in their own words or did they copy and paste without citing their source?
Do they use pictures or sound/movie clips in their presentation that would violate copy right laws?
Are you going to be able to allow your students time to work on their presentations in class. If they are doing a movie they will use the excuse that the camcorder is at home so they might waste an entire class period. Have them write out their scripts a head of time so when they record later it will go faster.
If you allow them time to gather information off the internet during class are they only going to appropriate sites and are they using their time wisely?
Do your students even know how to use powerpoint. It is a simple program. Are you going to require your students to use all of its features or is a simple presentation with mostly words and a few pictures ok?

The object of these projects isn't just to use up time. If the students have to do a project that will teach other people they will have to understand the information well in order to teach it. If they know nothing about the New Deal how can they create a movie about it with interview or news reporting. They will have to do some research on their own and that can be a very effective way to learn if it is on a low enough level that they don't get overwhelled and just give up. Make it manageable but also challenging enough so that your students need to work a little to make sure they are using accurate information in their presentations whether through a video or a powerpoint presentaion.

Ethics Reflection

I couldn't believe the amount of information teachers would need to know to keep themselves and their students out of trouble. Technology can be such a great thing to use with education just like we have been learning all semester but after brainstorming all the ways students could cheat useing technology some parts of it do not sound so great anymore. I guess as teachers we are just going to have to stay ahead of the game and not fool ourselves into thinking that our students would never do something like use their camara phones to cheat. We need to be realistic but not pessimistic about bringing technology into the classroom.

Lesson Plan Overview

My first lesson plan will deal with Standard 4, specifically objective 2. "Examine how World War I affected the military and the home front of the United States." I want my 10th grade US History students to understand the effects of the war on the home front and how it changed the lives of so many women. I will use inspiration to technologically enhance my lesson plan. By using Inspiration my students will be able to map out the specific results and changes on the home front. I want my students to be able to map out how the shortage of war supplies directly led to women working in factories and then how that led to a whole new concept of how women were looked at. Also, they will need to understand what these changed effected after the war was over. Did women want to stay in the working field or did they all quit and go back to how things were before the war ever started?

What are some good times for you. We could just get together at 3 again on Monday and work through our usuall class period but I'm open to other suggestions and times as well. Let me know what works best for you and good luck on our Hist 364 test too!

IP&T reflection

IP&T digital video reflection

Amy Eddy and Savanna Williamson watched the “Bookends of War” video on using technology in a lesson on Pearl Harbor and also “Why things are where they are” from the NETS Digital Video Library.
In the “Bookends of War” video, we observed that Gail VanDeVerg the teacher is having her Language Arts class create web pages with what they learn about Pearl Harbor from a field trip and guest speakers. They use digital cameras and some sort of web publisher to post pictures of their field trip on a web page. The students are excited about their work because their web pages will be entered in a contest that many people will see. Ms. VanDeVerg teaches the students how to use the technology but doesn't seem to really use it herself in the lesson. They did learn a lot and it was very interactive. They also used group work and other readings to help learn more. There may be a problem in other schools with using digital cameras and letting students use them on their own. The teacher may have to take the pictures and let the students put them on the web page.
In the “Why things are where they are” video, we observed that the students and the teacher were all using technology to learn about Geography. Nancy Haas, the teacher is teaching the students about different ways to teach Geography. She asks them to make a presentation about a particular country and to pay special attention to the people, culture, and environment. They think of questions they would want answered and then present their work to answer those questions. They use Power Point Presentations and laptops to create their projects. The students are all adults and work together in groups a lot. One barrier might be if there are not enough computers for each student. In that case, a teacher could do the project on a classroom level. Teachers could use other technologies such as wiki pages for the students to create web pages or Microsoft Publisher or Quark XPress to make pamphlets about the country.
